Splurge Vs Save - The answer

by Bex

And the answer is...

B!

As of 1.30pm today we had 29 votes with the majority voting for option B!  Although I do like that SvS without the poll gets people to comment (you know how we love comments), this new poll option does seem to get more responses as I guess it's easier to just click your answer :)

A - 11 votes
B - 18 votes

It was really fascinating watching the voting on the poll this morning (I had a quiet morning at work!), the As were in the lead at one point and it was even for quite a while before a last influx of Bs!  I think this is the first time I've ever managed to get anyone to think the save is the splurge but quite a few of you did.  Seeing some of you comment on Twitter about your choices was interesting too. Some basing it on the accessories and others the cut of the clothes. :)

Briony you may be surprised that the necklace was just £11 and the shoes only £20! (Details below.)

What do you all think of the actual outfit?  You can see me wearing something similar (and even cheaper!) below.

Here are the totals and details...

I didn't have a Pin It Do It ready for this week but have been meaning to do another Splurge Vs Save for a very long time now and I finally got round to it!  Come back this afternoon for the answer and my own take on this style.  I've set up a poll below but leave us a comment with your guess at the total values of each outfit below:

Splurge Vs Save

by Bex

This is kind of a cheat Splurge Vs Save as it's not really very similar nor is it a challenge as we usually do it so you can guess which is which.  I did promise we'd get back to doing SvS more regularly as a couple of you have missed it and truthfully so have we, they just take a bit more time to put together.  Look out for some more soon but for now, here is a top I found which got me interested in a trend I really don't like, despite being green!

You may have all seen the Kenzo tiger top and resulting copies which can be found on the high street.  They have featured in many a magazine and blog but I just don't like them at all.  It does come in other colours but the green seems to be the popular one, although the grey has also sold out too.  At £175 for a sweater, it's a pretty pricey trend.

What I found recently though is a (vaguely) similar design, albeit much more subtle, which I actually love!

Tiger Top

It's from Asda and was just £14.  I love the subtle white on white design of the tiger head.  The embroidery is very 3D which is difficult to see in pictures but looks great in real life.  As always, I'd rather wear something I love than follow trends and I know this isn't anywhere near as trendy looking, nor is it the 'it designer sweater' but I love it.

Worn here with my star print grey skinny jeans but I think it will also look great paired with one of my many maxi skirts or a pair of dark blue flares.  I'm sure you'll be seeing this top on the blog again soon!  :)

I know the only similarity is that it's a sweatshirt with a tiger's head on it but if you're after something more similar to the Kenzo one, Asda also had this tiger T-shirt for just £8 which I actually quite like as well.

Guest post - On the cover of a magazine

The lovely Lauren from Living In a Boxx sent us in this fashion related post. Lauren and I met at bootcamp over two years ago and I'm so glad we did :) She does a regular series on her blog (that she only started this year) which is very similar to our Splurge Vs Save  feature except she chooses things she's seen on a magazine cover and finds cheaper alternatives.  It's brilliant and I'm so glad we can share it here as it's a feature we've been lacking for quite a few weeks now!  Thanks Lauren, over to you...

Hi there! I'm Lauren normally over at Living in aBoxx, I'm here with a little guest post.  I've known Roz for a few years now and had the pleasure of meeting Bex through her.  I'll admit I was excited when Roz asked me to guest post but also a bit apprehensive, what the hell would I write about?
I decided to stick to what I'm used to.  I have a feature entitled 'On the Cover of a Magazine' in which I try to recreate the latest Vogue cover on the high street.  So here's a similar one featuring this months Cosmo.

The cover dress is Oscar De La Renta so you can imagine the price tag.  It's not too easy to get any feather dress cheaply though, unless you're talking fancy dress.  I couldn't find a fuchsia one anywhere!  I  did find these two bad boys in the sale though, making them more than affordable.

Left: Lipsy - £87.50
Right: ASOS - £48

Both are gorgeous, but with the second less than half the price in the sale it's got my vote.  If you're desperate for some jewel encrusted fuchsia, I've found these babies too...

Left: Forever Unique - £75
Right: Boohoo - £20

As for the jewellery - big gold and sparkly.  Dorothy Perkins and Etsy have some great flower rings.  I couldn't work out from the picture if Rachel's necklace is writing or not.  There are some lovely 'love' necklaces in Etsy and there are gold statement necklaces everywhere.

Top Left: Dorothy Perkins - £8.50
Top Right: Etsy - £4
Bottom Left: Etsy - £14.46
Bottom Right: Topshop - £16.50

Splurge v Save - the comparison

The answer is Option A is the Splurge...

Splurge Vs Save - Option A

Alice Olivia pleated maxi skirt

Nike

Marc by marc jacobs tote bag
£545 - mytheresa.com

Collar necklace
£135 - boticca.com

Click through on the images to go to Polyvore and see the individual item prices, but the Splurge comes in at an eye watering £1,300!  The price tag doesn't stop me from being in love with that skirt though and I would really love to add that bag to my collection!  Do you guys like it?

Option B is the Save...

Option B is much friendlier on the wallet coming in at £140.  I really love the skirt, almost as much as the one above, it's definitely a good price for a maxi (£32).  And if you used a pair of flip flops / sandals / wedges you already owned, rather than the £65 wedges pictured, the total cost of this outfit would be brilliant.

Splurge v Save - the maxi cut!

Given all the covet worthy maxi skirts on the market and how much Bex loves them, I thought I would use as maxi as the key piece for a Splurge v Save.

I've pulled together two similar, but different looks below, have a guess whether you think Option A or Option B is the Splurge but let us know which pieces you like best and why.

Come back at 1pm for the answer :)

Splurge Vs Save - The Comparison

The answer is B is the more expensive outfit.

I saw the Mint Velvet tunic dress first and loved the print and colour but it was a bit too much for me at £79, then I spotted the version in A which, although it looks more yellow, is exactly the same fabric in H&M for just £24.99!  It's from the plus size range and I bought an XL as it was the smallest they had (and 18 I think) but it fits really well with a waist cinching belt!
