Someone's turning 30!

Not me!  Just yet ;)

Nik's birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and this weekend we had a wonderful time in Edinburgh celebrating with his family.  His parents travelled up from Durham and his brother and girlfriend came up from London (his brother is going to be away when it's Nik's actual birthday which is why we celebrated early!)

Very lucky lovely weekend with lots of sunshine!
So to celebrate we headed to Edinburgh.  Nik and I have both always wanted to eat at Martin Wishart's restaurant since we lived in Edinburgh (where we met) and have never actually been.  Luckily I thought of this far enough in advance and managed to get a booking for the 6 of us on the Saturday night.  I have to say it was TO DIE FOR!  We all absolutely loved it, even Izzy's vegetarian menu looked amazing!  We all went for the tasting menu and had 6 courses of absolute deliciousness!!!  PLUS haggis bon bons when we arrived and a scrummy selection of amuse bouches!  Unfortunately I was so busy drooling and enjoying these delectable treats I only remembered to take photos from course number 3!!!  Oops!  So here is a wee sample of what we enjoyed!

Langoustine with parsnip and white choc puree with smoked butter sauce and chopped shrimps
Crab, white radish and some other yummy stuff :)
Almost forgot to take another pic!  This was my favourite - Roe Deer loin with white asparagus gratin and goats cheese gnocci
Rhubarb assiette of desserts including a really gorgeous rhubarb and ginger beer sorbet!

On Sunday we had a lovely walk around Edinburgh in the sunshine before everyone headed home.  Had some very nice smoothies from Hula following a rather large cooked breakfast at our hotel.

Me enjoying my smoothie - peach, banana, apple and strawberry!  YUM!

Nik is currently busy researching his present online.  I couldn't wait any longer to give it to him and as we were celebrating it this weekend I decided he could get his pressie early too!  (Impatient, moi?!)  As it is a year of big important celebrations - him turning 30, our wedding and his graduation (I am marrying a very clever cookie who has just completed a 2nd degree, this time in Medicine!) I decided to get him a large present to cover all 3 - as I was running out of ideas!!!  He has been putting up with his ailing PC for about a year now - it frequently just shuts off with no warning, takes about 5 minutes to boot up and often shows the 'blue screen of death!'  It is also at least 6 years old which I think in computer terms is pretty ancient!  Rather than choose him a replacement which he might not like ( could be an expensive mistake) I made him up a voucher....

The small print says '(and wedding and graduation!)'
The look on his face was priceless and I was literally shaking with excitement when he opened his card to find another envelope inside saying 'Surprise!'  I also knew he would like researching and choosing which to get and being a previous PC user he might not even want a Mac, although it seems I would have chosen well as he's most likely going to get the one on the voucher!  :)

I did also want to get him something he could keep forever (as inevitably this computer will at some stage fail/need replaced as well although hopefully not for a looong time!) And I found this Ted Baker watch online and had it engraved as a special keepsake of his 30th birthday.

Admittedly green is my favourite colour and not his (he doesn't even have one) but it's a stunning, unusual watch anyway and as he doesn't have his own favourite colour,  I've let him adopt green as his as well  ;)

I was planning on stopping there but then I accidentally found these GORGEOUS and super cute Mulberry cuff-links when browsing John Lewis for Dad/usher gift ideas and I just couldn't resist (hmmm, shopaholic tendencies anyone?) as I knew he'd love them and he does!

Besides, you only turn 30 once and presents soften the blow!  Hint Hint.....  ;)

Countdown

Not the channel 4 show but the free app for my android.  I just discovered I am not the only one to have such a thing installed - Nik has one too!  He claims he set it up when he set up an exam countdown but I still think it's sweet!

And for the record it's 79 days to go!!!  : D

Fun Paperwork!

It's official!  Just did the most fun paperwork ever (the paperwork was actually fairly boring but the result is more fun than any other paperwork I've done before!) and it's filed with the Registration Office in Glasgow :)

Now we just need to wait until a week before the wedding and we can collect our marriage license! Proper exciting, it's really happening now - legal and all!  : D

Super happy pic of me and Nik on the night we first kissed!  (This was before said kissing!)
And it was a fancy dress party by the way!!

We have our very own TRAFFIC SIGN!!!

I am absolutely in love with my latest wedding related parcel delivery (they are really starting to worry about my credit card usage at work with the amount of parcels I am getting!!!)  We got this via eBay for £18.

Seriously!  Our own tourist attraction coloured traffic sign pointing to our wedding!  :)  How much more exciting can wedding purchases get!? (Apart from THE DRESS maybe!)

Post Wedding Update:

Again, no photo from the photographer but Liz took this one...

And you can see it in our wonderful wedding highlights film by Cherry Tree Films (which I have taken a screen grab of here)...

Kimono

Still enjoying my boy free weekend as he is away on his Stag in Liverpool.  Just been tidying up 'the wedding room', my temporary name for our spare room which drives the boy crazy ;) and thought I would blog about my wedding morning attire.  Yes, I have planned this already as well!  In fact the idea for the kimono came while in Malaysia buying the bridesmaids fabric.  We were taken to the Jakel Silk shop by my Mum's fab friend Linda in Borneo.  We all ended up buying a lot more fabrics than just what I needed for the bridesmaids.  One of the fabrics I fell in love with (there was SO much choice!) was this silk one featuring a green design not dissimilar to seaweed on a taupe background.

Admittedly it needs ironing but you get the idea!
I had no idea what I would get made from it but when Linda had us round for dinner (jambalaya - YUM!) she mentioned that she had made herself a kimono and offered to make one for me.  I thought this would be my ideal outfit for my preparation pictures on the morning of the wedding and this particular fabric would be perfect for that!  Linda had to post it after we left Borneo and it just arrived last week from Malaysia (she even put a green butterfly sticker on the package, so cute!) and I love it!  Thanks Linda!  I can't wait to wear it, but other than having tried it on, I'm going to wait until the wedding day to keep it special - although I might wear it at the spa weekend!  :)

Post Wedding Update:

I didn't wear it for long as I was too hot!

Alone time and veils

Ahhhh bliss...similar to Kirsty over on A Safe Mooring, I do love a bit of time alone to chill/de-stress and as she so eloquently puts it, to balance things out.

I love my fiancé to bits, but sometimes it is nice just to have the place to myself!  I am currently sat in my cosy corner on the sofa (in my position as he calls it!) with a glass of Merlot (potential wedding wine so it's all in the name of research! ;)) and watching all of my saved up 'American Rubbish' as he calls it.  I absolutely love just sitting down and getting completely wrapped up in Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds and ER (they are actually playing the whole of ER on Sky Atlantic from the beginning, most of which I never saw the first time round so am LOVING it!)  Nik, however, hates this as he gets told to 'shush' a lot - he doesn't seem to realise that's just because he makes noise a lot and usually during either an exciting or tear-jerking bit!  Hmmmm, methinks he just does not get my escaping time where I get so involved in the 45 minutes of story that my mind switches off all worries - wedding, work or life related and I can properly chillax! (It's a word!)  Having said that, I do enjoy the multi tasking of blogging/surfing/watching all at once as well!

Me chillaxing with a book in Sri Lanka, the week before I became a betrothed lady :)

I'm also very much looking forward to starting a new book tonight while having the WHOLE bed to sprawl in :)  I really to miss him, honest!  Besides, it's good to be retain some independence and not pine for him every time he's away!  ;)

He is on his Stag weekend by the way, so I'm sure he's having a ball with his brother and friends down in Liverpool for the Grand National.  Goodness knows what they are up to this evening after the races today, I am determined not to text him on his 'last night of freedom' as it were despite my curiosity!

The fact he is away is actually rather good timing as his 30th birthday is coming up this month and I have a few secret projects to work on over the weekend that I don't want him to know about, for his birthday and wedding related!  I'm really looking forward to spreading out and getting crafty and arty with my ideas without having to worry about him walking in - just this week I had something I had to get finished and had to resort to putting up a sign saying DO NOT ENTER!!! on the spare room/kitchen door depending where I was working away!  I can't say any more in case he reads this.  When he gets back obviously, I very much doubt he will be checking my blog while away with the boys ;)

I have also finally ordered and paid for my veil!  I had trouble deciding between a long and 3/4 length style but eventually all of these images settled my mind on the long dramatic look...

There are more but I can't find the credits for them and don't want to get into trouble for stealing pictures!  Some other stunning veil photos I love are...

If I get pictures as gorgeous as these on our wedding day, I will be thrilled to bits!

I am now off to bed to start that book since it has taken me about 3 hours to finish this post!  The Criminal Minds episodes I had saved up were pretty good and distracting!  ;)

Post Wedding Update:

I did get one floaty veil shot but I was sitting on a bench and look a bit awkward so I don't really like it (and it's all shadowy), I wish I'd been a little more with it on the day when thinking of photos but was obviously too busy enjoying the day to be thinking about it.  I do have plenty of pictures in my veil though and loved wearing it!  I had to take it off sooner than I planned as it was falling out due to all the hugs!!

NEARLY forgot to even put it on!

Soooooo FUN!

This weekend we had our pre-wedding shoot or engagement shoot (although we're now closer to the wedding than when we got engaged!)  Matt, our photographer travelled up for the weekend to stay with us, see our venue and generally catch up as it's a long time since we had seen him.  We also got to do a great fun photo shoot to get used to posing and feel comfortable in front of the camera.

We decided to do our photo shoot up by Loch Lomond because a) that's where we met Matt on a photography weekend and we have spent a lot of time up there taking pictures together, b) we wanted to collect pebbles from our favourite beach for our flower features for the wedding, and c) we just love it up there - it's stunning!

We decided to just let go and have fun with the shoot and had a few ideas we wanted to try out!  Other than my obsession with green, I generally love bright colours so we wanted the photos to be happy and colourful and show our personalities.  Matt had the idea for us to bring our scuba masks with us as that's a big hobby we enjoy together - yes he did make us get in the freezing loch!  I'm hoping it was worth it!!  I absolutely can't wait to see the pictures!!!  I literally couldn't stop smiling all day!

As Matt is our friend as well as our photographer, he stayed the whole weekend with us which let us get some even more personal shots of us at home making sushi (his only request for the weekend  - other than get in that freezing water!! - was that Nik make some of his sushi he'd seen from a picture I had on facebook a while ago).

Nik's delicious Sushi last year!
I was a bit concerned that Nik wouldn't really be into the whole pre-wedding shoot idea, but he surprised me and we both really enjoyed it, even the romantic soppy ones!  It actually was really nice to just spend some time together after his recent exams and all the planning and get out up into the country again!

Today, we went off to see the venue in our local park for Matt to get an idea of the building, surroundings and available lighting and layout inside.  We then took a few more photos having fun in the park.

It was really great to see Matt again and we both had SO much fun being models for the weekend!  We even took a change of clothes up to the loch with us and when I couldn't decide which coat to take, Matt suggested I take them all (um yeh, that would be 8 coats!!) and we took some fun photos with me in all of my different coats!  (Slight shopaholic tendencies perhaps!)

Some of the most crazy I expect, will be the ones of us collecting our pebbles while wearing our posh party clothes at the end of the day, hehe, we almost forgot to collect them we were having so much fun!  We really did have such a fun day and I can't thank Matt enough for coming all the way up from Manchester for the whole weekend.

AND....today it's 3 months to go!!!  Woohooo, can't wait!  :)
