Sunday Lunch at The Crown Inn, Newick - review by Bex

You may have already seen this one if you get Uckfield Matters magazine as it appeared there first.

As part of my Local Roasts series of reviews, I went along to check out Sunday lunch at The Crown Inn in Newick with Nik, the twins and my in-laws.  It had been recommended by a friend and didn't disappoint!

We arrived for our booking at 1:45pm and were seated in a little snug area by the main door.  They explained when we arrived that they could only fit the six of us across the two tables in there so we had four of us on one table and two on another as they needed space to get through to serve so Priya and Ma had a table to themselves.

Kalyan wanted one of everything!

We had a choice of three mains; turkey, beef or nut roast, each served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and vegetables.  I chose the mustard glazed beef and I'm so glad I did, it was delicious!  I received two thick slices of tender beef and the rest of the portion size was generous too.  I loved the range of veg; we had cabbage, broccoli, purple carrot, parsnip, swede & carrot mash, charred baby gem lettuce and three roast potatoes, all of which were perfectly cooked as well as a lovely Yorkshire pud.

K was thrilled when his arrived!
A lovely addition was when they came out to ask if we'd also like any cauliflower cheese (a favourite of mine), served hot from the dish at the table.  This was also lovely, I think there might have been lemon zest in it as it had a very fresh citrus tang to it!

We all had plenty of gravy and the horseradish had a good kick to it.  Nik and the twins enjoyed their turkey too, it was nice and moist and the kids' portion was huge, we got them one to share and they had plenty, a bargain at £7.  The turkey main was £13.50 and the beef was £14.50 so on the pricier end of the scale as roast dinners go but worth it in my eyes as the quality was amazing.

We didn't see much of the rest of the pub as we were in our snug corner which was nice enough but had little atmosphere, just being us and a fan heater in front of the unlit fire.  From what I did notice of the pub though, it had more of a modern feel to it but with some traditional touches and old photos.  The twins also discovered a bookcase filled with games and toys after dinner which kept them amused while we digested our meals.  The kids meal came with ice-cream included so they were offered a scoop each but we declined as we didn't want to give them sugar right before their nap.  Us grown ups got a surprise sugar hit as we left though - the bill came with an espresso cup full of jelly beans.

Overall, we had a lovely time and we all really enjoyed our food, Nik's parents both thought it was the best roast they'd had around here.  The staff were friendly, polite and efficient.  We definitely plan to go back, I'd like to try some of their other food too.
